Chemical Reactions and Equations

๐Ÿ“š Class 10 Science โ€ข ๐Ÿงช Chemistry โ€ข โฑ 10 min read

Chemical reactions are an important part of Class 10 Science. In this chapter, we learn how substances change into new substances and how these changes are represented using chemical equations.

๐Ÿ“Œ Important Points

  • A chemical reaction produces one or more new substances.
  • Chemical equations represent chemical reactions using symbols and formulae.
  • Equations must be balanced according to the law of conservation of mass.
  • Reactions may involve changes in colour, temperature, state or gas formation.

What is a Chemical Reaction?

A chemical reaction is a process in which one or more substances change into new substances with different properties.

The substances that take part in a reaction are called reactants, while the substances formed after the reaction are called products.

Chemical Equations

A chemical equation is a short way of representing a chemical reaction using chemical symbols and formulae.

Reactants โ†’ Products

Example

Hydrogen reacts with oxygen to form water.

Types of Chemical Reactions

1. Combination Reaction

Two or more substances combine to form a single product.

2. Decomposition Reaction

A single compound breaks down into two or more simpler substances.

3. Displacement Reaction

A more reactive element displaces a less reactive element from its compound.

4. Double Displacement Reaction

Two compounds exchange their ions to form two new compounds.
